How Do I Buy a Vehicle Using AutoSettle?

How Do I Buy a Vehicle Using AutoSettle?

Buying a vehicle is a significant decision - and AutoSettle is here to make that journey simpler, safer, and more transparent. Whether it’s your first vehicle or your fifth, here are some practical tips to guide your purchase.

1. Always Use AutoSettle Secure Chat

Always keep your communication within the AutoSettle platform. It offers:

  • A record of conversations for transparency

  • Protection against scams

  • Support from our team if anything goes wrong

Alert
Avoid Sellers who push for off-platform payments or early personal contact info.

You access the Secure Chat by visiting the Deal Room in AutoSettle.

Note that the Secure Chat is also AI moderated.

2. Take the Vehicle for a Test Drive

You have the choice in AutoSettle to organise a Test Drive before committing. It’s your chance to:

  • See how the vehicle performs on the road

  • Listen for any unusual sounds

  • Check comfort, visibility, brakes, and steering

  • Ensure the car feels right for you

If a Seller refuses a test drive, that may be a red flag. A genuine Seller should expect this step. Sometimes when a vehicle is rare or attractive to non-genuine buyers, a Seller may ask for a deposit in order for a Test Drive to occur.

3. It’s Okay to Make an Offer

Think the Vehicle Listing Price is too high? You can use the Make an Offer tool in the Buying Tools if the Seller has enabled Offers. You could make a reasonable offer if:

  • The vehicle’s condition is not what you would expect for a vehicle of that price

  • Recent maintenance and servicing cannot be demonstrated

  • Current market value is lower than the Vehicle's Listing Price

  • Any expected repairs have not been completed

Friendly negotiation is common - don’t hesitate to engage in respectful back-and-forth conversation with the Seller.

4. If It Doesn’t Feel Right, Walk Away

You’re under no obligation to buy the vehicle just because you’re in conversation or inspecting the vehicle

Trust your instincts. If something seems off - about the vehicle, the paperwork, or the Seller - it’s okay to walk away.

5. Ask for More Photos

Need a better look? Ask the Seller to send detailed photos of:

  • Exterior from all angles

  • Interior features like seats, dash, and controls

  • Tyres, wheels, and engine bay

  • Any visible wear, damage, or imperfections

A reputable Seller won’t hesitate to provide these.

6. Check the VIN Number

Check that the VIN Number of the vehicle matches the VIN Number listed with AutoSettle.

AutoSettle only publishes verified VIN Numbers to provide you with the confidence in the vehicle you are buying.

This confirms:

  • Vehicle details are accurate

  • There are no VIN discrepancies

7. Check the Service History

If available, ask for:

  • The vehicle’s logbook

  • Service and repair invoices

  • Any recent mechanical reports

Even partial records help you understand how well the car has been maintained.

8. Ask Questions - It’s Your Right

Don’t hold back from asking legitimate questions about the vehicle. Ask the Seller things like:

  • Why they’re selling the vehicle

  • What the vehicle's typical usage has been (e.g., long drives vs. city runs)

  • How frequently it’s been serviced

  • Whether it has ever been in an accident

No question is too small when your money and safety are involved.

9. Choose a Safe Meeting Spot

If you're inspecting or test-driving a vehicle:

  • Choose a public, well-lit location

  • Bring a friend, if possible

  • Let someone know where you’re going

  • See our list of Safe Sites.

Take your time. You’re not required to finalise the deal on the spot.

Buying a vehicle should be a positive experience. With the right questions, preparation, and support from AutoSettle, you can shop confidently and find the vehicle that’s right for you.
